What do Students Really Want
The Daily Telegraph has just published a student poll conducted by Olympus which highlights what students think they should be doing at University.
The list headed ‘Things to do before leaving University’ includes many typical student experiences like getting into arguments with housemates over buying toilet rolls; ringing parents when money is needed; collecting 500 friends on Facebook and spending no more than £10 on a night out.
I could have added a whole list of additional experiences based on my own days as a student. These would include contracting a venereal disease from drunken sex with various strangers; falling asleep on the roof of a parked car; racing across a golf course on mountain bikes and breaking into a zoo to try and steal a penguin.
These are experiences that you can really only have as a student. But student life is actually full of risks. There are actually many students whose college days are far from a happy experience. Often they are in unfamiliar towns and cities, away from home for the first time where they might find themselves prey to unscrupulous landlords only too happy to take their limited cash.
Students in many of Britains towns and cities are becoming targets for muggings and theft. Its well known that students all have mobile phones, laptops and mp3 players and these are very attractive to local criminal gangs who prey on these unsuspecting young students. Student life can be a lot of fun, but these days it can also be fraught with danger. Todays students would do well to take classes in self-defence and avoiding confrontation.
Having fun, making friends and enjoying the freedom of being away from mum and dad are all part of what it is to be a student. But its always important to remain safe.

The Insurance Every Student Must Have
The time in our lives when we most need spending money is when we are students and, ironically, the time in our lives when we have spending money is when we are working and have no time to spend it.
Most students will want to avoid what they see as unnecessary expenses like life insurance. The can be a false economy. For example, travelling without adequate travel insurance is simply foolish. The expense of repatriation, if the worst should happen, can be crippling without adequate travel insurance cover. Yet many students still choose to head off for their gap year on the road with inadequate insurance cover.
When taking to the road all students need to be certain that they have adequate and appropriate travel insurance cover. Always ensure that your travel insurance policy covers all of the activities that you will be enjoying while on your travels.
Although it might be argued that a life insurance policy should be low on a student’s list of priorities this is not the case for personal possessions. Students these days have a whole host of costly gadgets including expensive laptops, games consoles and mobile phones. And these expensive devices can often be lost, stolen or damaged. At the very least every student should consider getting some mobile phone insurance and maybe look at other low cost, specific insurance policies for other valued possessions.
At the very least I would suggest that all students should insure their mobile phones and their laptops against loss, theft and damage. Gadget insurance will mean that if he worst should happen and your laptop of mobile gets lost or damaged at least you will be able to afford a replacement. Insurance will buy you a new laptop or mobile phone but can't replace all that valuable lost data?
